    1. She would not have that farm if it weren't for capitalism. The anti-capitalism shit that's flying around lately is just repeated nonsense from other sources who also don't understand how our economic system has actually allowed democracy to EXIST. It's one of many essential ingredients in a democracy.

For sure, capitalism has run amok in the US - I have an 80 year old dear friend who's fucking freezing in houston right now. Humanity has demonstrated repeatedly throughout history that those in power will leverage that power into more wealth and power regardless of who it hurts as long as it's not them. That's not a function of capitalism, that's a function of humanity.

Socialist democracy is working better, IMHO, than the capitalist free for all in the US. Note, I didn't say "socialism" or "communism" because we've seen how those systems are a rocket ship for fascist dictatorships.

I guess I don't understand your logic. So... people in the many European countries who don't have a capitalist form of government don't have savings, sell things, or have mortgages???

    5. Capitalism is not a form of government. I think that's your first point of confusion.

Free-market capitalism wants to operate without any government regulation at all.

"European countries" covers a lot of ground, and that generalization tells me that I think you don't know much about the economics in the EU. Capitalism functions vastly differently depending on which country you're looking at in the EU. The Ukraine / Romania / Poland is totally different economically than France / Sweden / Norway.

Capitalism is an economic ingredient, and it exists in the economies of all sorts of countries with different governments, even communist and socialist governments.

    6. Speaking generally, China is a communist state. Yet China has a thriving capitalist economy that's overtaking the planet. Capitalism is not a form of government at all, it's an economic system.

    7. "Capitalism - BAD!" is just repeated by people who don't have some basic vocabulary around economics. It's like saying "Socialism - BAD!" when what people usually mean when they say that is that a command economy is bad - which is true! Just ask Russia. A socialist economic system is a pipeline to fascism.

Socialism as an element of democracy is completely different. I think socialist democracy may be what you're talking about when you say "european countries who don't have a capitalist form of government."

Socialist democracies do have capitalist economies - otherwise they wouldn't be wealthy enough to provide social services to their citizens.

Because command economies suck so terribly, capitalist / free-market models are idealized - especially in the US as the "American Dream". But the truth is that the free-market economy sucks for a lot of people. Many Chinese citizens are suffering as a result of their free-market economy, free of even basic safety regulations that north americans take for granted.

China and the US have very different forms of government, but similar free-market economies.

This is why a mixed economy has been adopted by many countries, which is what I am guessing you might be thinking about when you say "European countries". However, not all countries with mixed economies or socialist democracies have healthier, happier citizens.

People point to the wealthiest European countries as examples of why capitalism is terrible and look at what we could have if we got rid of capitalism! The wealthiest EU countries with mixed economies DO have better funded public programs, and that's a good thing, and the US and Canada SHOULD want more of that here.

      However.

Those wealthy happy healthy EU citizens are able to live that way BECAUSE their economy has a vital capitalist element - the well-developed, industrial, mixed economy ensuring the tax base is able to fund all of the things that makes the people in Denmark and Sweden and Finland such happy healthy citizens benefitting from the socialist elements of their governments.

Some of the poorest EU countries have mixed economies too, and some poor EU countries have free-market economies. The ingredient of capitalism is a small part of why a citizen of a particular country experiences economic growth or hardship. Capitalism itself is not bad or good. It's simply an economic ingredient.

So, yes. Jenna working with for-profit organizations is participating in capitalism.
Jenna and millions of other people have mortgages through for-profit financial institutions, which is capitalism, whether you're in a free-market economy, or a mixed economy. As long as you're not living in a socialist *state* where there is *no* private property, capitalism is a part of your economy.

Jenna's ability to post her products and services for sale is capitalism, yet she's recycling the anti-capitalist populist talking points without really understanding what she's talking about.

  2. Can I vent???

I see animal group and farm posts where people in TX, LA, etc write about the horrible, dangerous, unseasonably cold weather they're struggling with right now. As soon as I'm feeling their pain, some idiot writes: "Well, where WE live, we're that cold / colder all winter, and we're OKAY." People who write crap like that should just STFU. It doesn't help.

I get that people who live up North are used to cold weather - so am I. Our animals know low temps, may have furry coats and probably enjoy insulating winter blankets - provided by us. Our water pipes are buried below the frost line, homes are insulated, road crews get up at 3 am to plow and many of us have a generator / wood burning stove in case the power goes out. Likely, there's a decent winter vehicle (and know-how to drive in snow). Except for a very few Northern fools (I'm lookin' at you Pig Shocker), animals, even aged ones, can be well looked after in the cold.

It's not the same set up down South. The infrastructure isn't designed for cold. Homes aren't winter-insulated, horses don't have thick coats and water lines aren't frost-proof. Hell, animals may not even have fully-covered shelters or barns (kind of like FFF's hell-on-earth farm). Roads aren't plowed, road crews may not have salt and stores probably don't stock a lot of water heaters, extra blankets and tape heater  insulation.

So folks need to have some empathy and sympathy for the Southern friends who've been trying their best to help their animals survive and thrive in this shitty weather.

    Stepping off my soapbox now.

    Stay safe y'all.

    1. I agree. My brother has lived in Florida for 20 years. He got cold dumb in that time. He was emphatically telling me that pipes won’t freeze inside the house. I told him he's an idiot (cause he's my brother). Then later he mentioned in passing that he had the cabinet doors open and he was dripping water. HA. You don't know stuff that you don't have to deal with. I didn't know until relatively recently that when you turn the cold water tap in the south, the water isn’t cold. Hmmm. Makes since but I didn’t consider it.

    3. Hound Doggy, I remember days living in a tiny, barely-insulated four room cottage. After one session of thawing out a frozen water line, we sure learned to leave the kitchen sink cabinet door open, with the faucet dripping water! We also stacked hay bales along the foundation (covered in plastic if we had it) to keep the cold out. Not sure if that was steeped in any kind of science - more like rural "wisdom".

Way below-zero in an uninsulated house is a no fun if you never experienced it and don't know what to do.

No excuse for FFF though. She's lived in that place for 10+ years. If she hasn't figured out how to keep the house in winter-shape by now, she's a special kind of ignorant.

    4. We build here for heat when it comes to animals. Our barn is designed to mitigate the multiple 100+ degree days we get a year. We have been scrambling to add on for temps around zero. I'm glad we had extra oil heaters from when our furnace died a few years ago. It hasn't been this cold in 20 years.

    5. PDD - Great post...all excellent points. Especially about cold weather supplies not available in states that are considerably warmer. (I once visited a Costco in the Pacific Northwest that had a huge inventory of cool stuff like puffy ski jackets, heavy duty hiking boots, colorful sweaters, etc. Then I airheadedly asked my friends, "Why doesn't my So Cal Costco have the same stuff?")

HD - What is the reason for leaving cabinet doors open? And why is tap water in the South not cold?

I hope all in TX and elsewhere get relief soon. The news photos on Daily Mail are unbelievable, heartbreaking. Disclaimer: I don't find the Daily Mail to be a reputable news source (they are biased and like to speculate) but no other online news site has the incredible amount of photos as DM.

    6. I can answer your questions about the cabinet doors and (maybe) the tap water. You leave cabinet doors open under the sinks so the heat from the house can help prevent the trap and drain line from freezing. Another way to do that is to let a trickle of water run from the cold water tap (so as not to drain the hot water heater causing higher heat bill). Running water will not freeze, thus keeping your pipes from freezing.

As to why the water isn't cold, I can speculate. Here in the north our main water lines are buried beneath the frost line, so they are about 6 feet deep in my area. It's cold that deep in the earth. I can imagine that in the South, they don't need to bury their lines that deep to prevent freezing, and the lines are closer to the surface, thus warmer.

      Delete
    7. Thanks for the explanation DM. That all makes sense now.

I wonder what happens when city folk move to places where those things happen. I guess they learn the hard way?

      Delete
    8. Duck Mama hit the description 100%. Most water lines are close to exterior of homes, and are first to freeze. I think if neighbors know you're not "local" they'll give you winterizing tips. In other cases (like with us) we learned by trial and error.

If people in Texas knew way ahead of time that their world would freeze and their utilities would fail, they might have buried lines or emergency water supplies below the frost level. But no one imagined that because it happens so infrequently.

If this becomes the new normal under "global weirding", no doubt contingency plans will be changing.

Yesterday it was 32 and today it’s supposed to be 39. I don’t go out when it’s like it has been...like 2.

  10. (From the last thread):

Duckmama wrote: "I wonder what happened with that doc movie business? They probably found her too insufferable to work with."

DM - Upon re-reading what she wrote, it kinda sounds like the whole thing was her idea/fantasy. And from a few particular things she said, it seems like it was maybe a contest she was trying to win:

"BIG NEWS!!! So I have big news: Cold Antler Farm is going to be a movie! CAF will be the subject of an independent documentary about the making of a small farm. Legally, I can't delve into details about the production, but I can send you to a site to learn more about it and contribute if you like towards the filmmaking process. What it is—is a crew of filmmakers coming to here throughout the first year. They will document the beginning stages of one small Northeast farm. They'll film the new ram, flock and lambs. They'll capture everything from roto-tilling to farmers markets and fairs—making a visual journal of a girl trying to makes things happen. They're interested in capturing the challenges along the way and the back-story that's lead up to it: a sort of lifestyle story about what this life choice means to me and how I got here. Quite the goings-on, quite!"

    1) She says she "legally" can't delve into the "details" (Is she trying to hide the truth?)

    2) But!! She posted a handy link where you can "contribute" (This link no longer works, so no details known about the documentary company involved.)

    3) As for the "filmmaking crew" how did they even know about her? She wrote this in 2010 and she hadn't published any "books" yet, and was relatively unknown.

    4) She states that they will "document the beginning stages of a farm" -- which further begs the question of how they knew of some unknown wannabe upstart in the first place?

In conclusion, I feel that the whole thing was a contest where the winner was the applicant who was able to raise the most contributions via that link. And she lost cuz she hadn't written any books yet and didn't have many foollowers either. Anyway, just my theory based on what she said...and what she didn't say.

    1. Forgot one more clue:

      5) She wrote that they were interested in "what this life choice means to me and how I got here."

Does that sound like a normal thing that a documentary team would ask of someone they sought out at random? No. It sounds like a typical question you'd find on an application or a contest entry form. And questions like that are usually asked for consideration purposes. So they were "considering" her, but only if she managed to wrangle up the most contributions for the documentary and their team.

  20. Just stumbled across this writeup on Jenna back in 2011....very interesting.

This is a paragraph straight from the article. I think we all here have the same feeling:

She runs her own farm, and I think it takes a certain kind of person to personally kill an animal. Most meat eaters would probably feel uneasy about actually killing an animal themselves, and anyone who actually cares about animals in the slightest would never kill an animal, unless they were a vet or the animal was clearly suffering. To actually personally kill an animal to eat it takes someone with no care for animals.

    1. I find that to be untrue about killing an animal and eating it takes a person who has no care for animals.

I butcher my own poultry, I've butchered meat rabbits I've raised, and I've even helped dress out deer my husband had shot.

It's hard, even after having butchered dozens of birds, to be completely be desensitized to it. I have to mentally prepare myself, because it's not an easy task to take a life. I find peace in it only because I know they aren't factory farmed and I'm providing nutritious food for my family.

I think lumping everyone who kills and eats animals as basically cold, uncaring people is an inaccurate conclusion. Hmm, conclusion might not be the right word there, I'm just struggling with thinking of the correct term (yay migraine). But either way, the statement made in that post is very broad and doesn't reflect how a lot of homesteaders and farmers feel about raising, butchering, and eating animals.

I apologize if I ruffle some feathers with comment, but I wanted to provide a different perspective from someone who actually raises and butchers animals to feed their family.

    2. I've always wondered about that. I know I couldn't do it but I respect those who do butcher their own meat (as long as they don't put the laughter back in slaughter like a certain awful someone).

When I was a kid one of my favorite meals was Pappy Parker's Fried Chicken. But when I turned 10 my parents got me a parakeet and I couldn't eat chicken after that. Still don't.

    3. I agree with concerned homesteader. IMO, It's people with no care for animals who allow the factory farm system to thrive. Killing an animal to eat it is the circle of life. Care about the animal's quality of life, care about a humane method of slaughtering, but if you're eating animals, you don't care about them more because you're unwilling to do it so you buy them from the mainstream meat industry. Not that everyone has to do it (that wouldn't be an efficient system; I don't kill animals to eat myself, although I have killed animals for other reasons) but squeamishness is not a virtue.

    4. I wonder if the person in that link had more of a problem with the small amount of animals she raises? For example, take a larger volume farmer who butchers just 1 of the 100 of pigs they raise for supper. Chances are they won't know which individual pig it was, so it's probably less emotional.

Whereas JFW usually only has 2-3 pigs at one time, and she makes a big deal about giving them special quirky names. She takes lots of photos and blegs about them too. And then she gleefully butchers and eats them. That type of cavalier attitude (in addition to shocking the poor things) is maybe what that person meant.

    5. Just about the only thing I disagree with in this post (which is otherwise accurate and hilarious) is that people who care about animals could never kill one personally. That's just not true.

Hunters are divided into two tribes: ethical harvesters, and trophy hunters. Trophy hunters give hunting a bad name. They have a destructive effect on the ecosystems, and they often leave their kills in the field, taking only the trophy. They also think canned hunting, or hunting from helicopters, or driving with 4x4s is "hunting". It's not.

Traditional hunters care deeply about making a selective, clean kill. They care about maintaining the hunting grounds so that their children and grandchildren can continue to hunt. Hunters have founded environmental protection agencies and national parks.

Just like ethical hunters, I know there are farmers who don't give a shit about their animals, and farmers who care deeply about their animals' lives, and who take a hit to their profits and yield to satisfy their conscience. My ex's homesteading family - a real homestead, by the way, not a hobby farm - they slaughtered their own cattle on site for over 100 years before factory farming made shipping to industrial slaughterhouses necessary for survival. They do still harvest the annual family beef and pork at home.

The blog post did have the black and white perspective of the new vegetarian, which he says he is. Ahhh, I remember when I too thought it could just be that simple. I was vegetarian for two years, vegan for an additional year. I just couldn't be healthy on that diet, so back to meat I went.

      Delete
    6. Truth, WIW.

No pot involved (lol), but at University, I was vegetarian, vegan, then macrobiotic. At some point in my dietary logic, I couldn't justify eating higher forms of plant life (which have been shown to feel "pain") or animal life. But I also discovered it's impossible to avoid using animal products, thereby being complicit in causing animal deaths, because they are contained in so many commercial products (see PETA list https://www.peta.org/living/food/animal-ingredients-list/ ).

Over time, I moved back to eating meat, but much less of it, and for decades I've supported legitimate local farmers who sell meat. I know them, and I visit their farms where, unlike with a certain fake feral farmer, they treat their animals with care and compassion, and offer a quick death.

Have I eliminated animal suffering? Sadly, no. But unless we are committed to eating a diet of single-cell plants and gently sweeping the sidewalk ahead of our barefoot walks, animals will be killed for our needs: if we cannot keep them from being killed, the question becomes how did they live and how did they die?

Btw, I would take hunted meat over factory farmed any day. I respect the sustenance hunter who honors an animal and makes a quick kill. I detest the hypocrisy of a "small" farmer who purports to care for animals but raises them neglectfully, provides a sad life and offers no compassion at their end. FFF isn't deserving of business because of how she's treated animals. The farmers I work with are the opposite of her.

"Just up regretting everything I've ever done or said."

Does that include the pigs she shocked and the myriad animals she called assholes? Wonder if she really regrets anything or if this is just a new ploy for sympathetic donations?

    1. She's being a sympathy troll.

I think most people have had anxiety that disturbs their sleep. It's usually temporary, associated with a temporary situation that's beyond their control. Losing sleep over stress is a part of life.

Jenna's perpetual beg-fest interjected with i HaVe AnXiEtY posts is just her typical, mass-produced, hydrogenated version of marketing.

  23. When I wake up in the middle of the night due to anxiety about something, it’s my literal wake up call to do something about the issue.

My latest was purchasing something I really didn’t need and couldn’t afford. My psyche kept waking me up until I returned it. Had a great night’s sleep last night.

Those 2 a.m. wake up calls are your inner wisdom speaking to you. The problem is she never listens.

I was up in the wee hours thinking about a sick chicken I've been nursing for 10 days. I think that's pretty normal behaviour for a homesteader but I doubt Jenna would give it a second thought.

Can you imagine how amazing it would be if she sold the place to someone who documented returning it to a working farm/homestead? I'd read that book!

    1. Oh god that would be amazing. I would love to own a house like that, if I had the resources to restore it.

For now, I'll just work my full time job, my part time business, and my part time school schedule in my low-maintenance condo and work towards a future where I can afford such a property and space.

  26. "I am still on the lookout for a new (to me) pickup truck. My budget is under 3k so you can imagine there hasn’t been a lot of luck out there."

3K is ridiculous for a pickup. You could probably get a decent corolla for 3 - 5K, but any pickup she'd get for $3K will be scrap in a year or two. It's such a crazy-expensive way to deal with your transportation needs.

Doesn't she get everything she needs delivered anyway? The hay, the firewood? What is she actually *picking up* with a pick up?

And note that ever-present low-key ask code word, "luck". She wants to be lucky, and HOPES to catch a break, ie a freebie / friend deal.

What is it they say about beggars? They can't be.... what?

Firewood, hay, plumbers bills, oh my! Her moxie has been smacked! Not her moxie!

Firewood and hay is a NORMAL BILL, and guess what, plumbers are a normal bill for a homeowner too - not one you'd expect to pay every year, but par for the course when you own 6 acres and an old farmhouse. There's nothing there that should do anything to her "moxie". She's not fucking "wounded" by bills. Bills are a part of life and that doesn't make it a "very hard winter".

Frozen pipes - a very hard winter! Has she seen the kind of winter folks in Texas are having? Losing your whole damn home is a very hard winter.

I also want to call bullshit on her digging a septic tank out of frozen ground. With what? I know she didn't do that shit with a shovel. Maybe someone with a backhoe did the bulk of the work and she chipped away around the pipe with a shovel, beside other workers. Maybe that I'd believe.

"And I am working daily on a new, very personal book about what happened to me over the past ten years."

This book will be 85% fiction. Where is the worlds tiniest violin, I want to play for her! 🎻

    1. Good point about her wanting a truck when she technically doesn't need one. Yes, she has everything delivered. So no need except for the "romantic idea" of driving a truck around her small town. It's all part of her live-like-fiction fantasyland.

And agreed, her idiotic idea of a "very hard winter" is lack of money and not the severe cold.

Also wondering: What's it like to dig into frozen ground? Is it as hard as concrete or something?

  27. I keep thinking she has to pay cash for her new truck and only has $3,000.? Well if she has had $3,000. why has she been behind on her mortgage all this time? If she had money in the bank I think I would have been keeping the mortgage paid so I would have a roof over my head. I swear she never makes sense.

    1. Anon 6:59 I've also had trouble posting at times, and then I find I can post again once a new thread starts (as in a new post / set of comments)

I completely agree. This bitch has NO BUSINESS being behind on her bills given the choices she makes which creates each supposed crisis / need for bailout.

And honestly, I don't think she's EVER been truly close to losing that property, because *I* have experienced housing security and let me tell you, that survival mechanism kicks in FAST. You pay for housing before you buy ANYTHING else, and you sure as shit do not waste a spare $3K on a beater vehicle that is going to die in another year or two.

"Loser lifestyle" as others have said. That's exactly it. You'd think she'd want to sock that $3K away to have a bit of a freaking cushion / emergency fund, LIKE A NORMAL ADULT does.

    3. She mentioned she couldn't make car payments. Why? Why not put $3,000 down and take out a loan for the balance like everyone else does.

      Delete
    4. I'm thinking she's going to do another Kiva loan for her "business" and declare it a necessity for the "farm". $3000 is a resonable amount to ask for and the payments would be low.

    5. Hey Anon 6:59 - I haven't posted in a few days, but I've had no trouble posting here tonight. And yes, her still begging when she supposedly has $3K set aside is total bullshit. If she needs hay or whatever, just dip into that 3K and "earn up" the difference when you can. But no, she likes to rely on online strangers.

  28. Remember the "run like a wolf" thing she did last summer, where she paid to get a bit of swag and run 100 miles over the summer, or something like that?

Well she's doing it again, except this time she's paying $12 / month.

Let me reiterate, I would not care what she spends her money on, if she were not constantly crying poor and saying she's "behind" and has anxiety and needs to "catch up".

For normal people, if $12 / month membership motivates you to exercise, great! win win. But if you're claiming to be struggling to pay for the damn roof over your head, you have no business signing up to a thing like this.

    Hypocrite.

  29. Is the "wait 8 weeks before I can start your logo" thing just bullshit?

I'm doubtful that she actually lives off of her soap and cartoon / logo sales, but if she DID, you'd think she'd hunker down for a few days and just get a bunch of them done. How many are supposed to be in the que that you'd have to wait 8 weeks before she even LOOKS at what you want, even though you paid her already?

Two months out is a great way to actually get people to NOT buy your services. I'm beginning to wonder if, when she does this, that she is having the "sale" because she wants to attract someone who just likes to follow her and isn't itching to actually get any product, and at the sale price, might just forget they ever bought anything from her. When they ask about it after 12 weeks pass, she can just claim she's so behind, always behind.

She also can't have a fire sale on logos while there's a lineup of people who haven't gotten their product yet, so this "wait 8 weeks" thing I believe is a part of her strategy to get money and not have to do any work.

Real entrepreneurs find ways to make their business more efficient, not less.

    1. It is definitely her strategy and she's been doing it for years. She has people pay up front and then "forgetting" their emails or she has computer problems, etc. You get the picture. She's hoping enough time will go by and they will forget or just plain give up after emailing her countless times to finally get on with it.

Why does it take 8 weeks to get to something? She is soooo busy getting to other people's orders? I don't think so. Her logos look like crap to begin with. She gets clipart from a source, slaps some words on it (same tired old fonts) and that's it. And if she's such an amazing graphic designer, logos is all she can do? That's laughable.

She's just a lazy POS lying loser. Always has been, always will be.

    2. WIW - What you said here: "Two months out is a great way to actually get people to NOT buy your services" -- this made me think about the Shammers here who believe that Jenna doesn't really have any money problems and that all her "emergencies" are just a way to beg for extra money to buy luxury crap.

And you're right...cuz it's possible that by saying "8 weeks out" she' really doesn't want the work because she doesn't need it to pay the bills. What she needs is the optics to look like she's actually doing work to cover up her real income. Which who knows what that is. Disability? Law suit settlement money? Furry artwork business? Fans Only cam-girl account for farmers with a freak fetish?
