ReplyDeleteLast week, we had another hay delivery from our local supplier. (We purchased the hay back in June and the farmer delivers quarterly.) He has a small farm stand in town and in chatting with him, we learned his business has never been better. He routinely sells out of everything he offers and he's formed an informal network of farmers-craftspeople to sell what people want. He sells eggs, vegetables, seeds, meats, garlic, herbs, baked goods and prepared meals. His farm stand is self-serve and on the honor system (although he recently installed a security camera). In our small town, he's earned over $10,000 for charity by selling home-made cloth face masks.
Yesterday, I picked up a bushel of apple seconds at another local farm. "How's business?", I asked. The owner's daughter laughed and said they are jamming and admitted it's the "same story for every grocer and farmer." Their baked goods sell out, their produce can hardly keep up, their CSA is sold out and their potted perennials are long GONE.
Unlike PS, the owners of the two farms I mention are active in the community, dependable, honest and kind-hearted. They are respected and loved. None were "trust fund babies" or given handouts. All worked outside jobs in addition to farming. They started small and gradually improved their farms, year after year.
Their stories are not unique. Large or small, area farmers who are flexible and willing to diversify/meet customer needs are doing exceedingly well. One owner started out with a handful of acres and made a niche selling organic starter plants. One couple focuses on garlic. Another does goat cheese and milk. Several individual farmers, on teensy plots of land, sell eggs, baked goods, jams and soaps at their roadside stands. None are ripped off by the community. In the rare case that items/money are stolen, the community rallied and made them whole.
That Pig Shocker does not do this and seems to have virtually no local support really says she's known to the community ... and probably despised.

I also agree about farmers in our area being swamped with people wanting to pay them for reputable products. She has no "welcome" left to "wear out" in Cambridge or elsewhere.

Yes, it's laziness, but I think that she is terrified - knows she can't actually do most of what she claims to do well enough to be paid for but just tries things on a whim -- so she plays and dabbles and gets "anxious", and begs. She has the emotional maturity of a 13 year old (at most), so she tries to hide her failings and lack of skill instead of developing the adult ability to learn and grow from failure.

It occurred to me the other day that it's been quite some time since I've seen Jenna's (former?) friend Lee comment on any of the Pig Shocker's social media posts. Are they no longer talking? Is Lee too busy? Not sure about the first, but the second is beyond true. I did a DuckDuckGo search and found this recent article which tells a great story of how they got started:

I then checked out the official Moxie Ridge website and found that a lot had changed. It's a very professional website, clearly listing all available products with details on exactly how they're made. (Hint: No day-old donuts for the pigs at this farm.)
But what blew me away was that in addition to several varieties of cheese he also offers eggs, pork and chicken. So not only that, but Lee driving his farm products to far off farmer's markets in the early morning whilst the Wog is still sleeping off the whisky.
Lee certainly sets the bar high for first generation farmers starting out. And this link below, I forgot which one I clicked on, but it was a recent press article that detailed how the operation quickly expanded with lots of hard work. A really neat, captivating story of how they grew their operation from just a small goat dairy farm to a much bigger farming enterprise. A super interesting read somewhere at this link:

However someone who was investigated and rented a bobcat to remove the goat shit that the goats were standing on and eating off of and that bobcat got stuck because of how much there was, would give their herds away as quickly as possible so they didn't have to pay fines and go to court.

Now I’m on automatic pilot. My SS check and annuities are deposited like clockwork. Bills are paid through auto bill pay. I can sleep in, take a nap or have a lazy day if I’m not feeling well.
She has probably reached the point of no return although she is unaware of it.
What happens to a person who doesn’t contribute to SS or Medicare? If you don’t contribute you don’t collect, right?
You have to work and contribute for 10 years for each of those programs. If not, I'm not sure what happens, but probably you'd go on some sort of Medicaid for "destitute" persons for medical. For SS retirement, you just wouldn't get anything.

I wonder if she and Lee have fallen out, as it doesn't seem Moxie Farm is linked under the "friends and mentors link" on CAF blog. Maybe the link was never there to begin with though. Many of the links are outdated.
ReplyDeleteI did a search through the winter & spring posts of 2018, and the only mention of an animal welfare investigation is the vague illusion about a "troll" sending "the police" to her door.
Based on the contents of the posts, it looks like she TRIED to sell them, and ended up giving them to Lee.
I'm waiting for the "things are looking up!" post that's about due, given where we are in the begging cycle.
No mention of Shannon paying rent or contributing anything, which tracks, honestly. Who could abide a moocher but one who has no higher expectations for herself?
She would never admit that her hand was forced to rehome the animals or that she was investigated and it didn't go well.

Late to the discussion about Moxie Ridge, but want to comment because Lee's farm is a testament to having a business plan and doing the hard work to get there. He started small, improved his property year after year - no whining, just rolled-up sleeves. I saw photos of him diligently renovating his dairy processing space during the early days of the pandemic. He couldn't do farmer's markets (driving to NYC), but took the time to renovate and offer pandemic-friendly long-distance farmer boxes of goodies. If you've seen photos of the work space where he processes, it's amazingly clean - you could eat off the floor!

I know...CAF readers aren't used to real farmers who do what they say they'll do, only emotionally-stunted, LAF pretenders who are terrified to let the general public (or inspectors) see what really goes on.
NO reputable farmers I know (me included) would ever be worried about unannounced visits from authorities. Caring for animals is a 24/7 job. They are looked after first. It's what we do. And love.

In certain states it takes one visit to a doctor, $100 to a lawyer to ride SSI's ass and about 6 months to get disability for mental illness. It's a few steps but not difficult at all. Depends on the state. Someone I worked with previously and a neighbor both got it that way.

A guy interviewed her about her farm and complemented her on her pig/animal set up. He didn't sound like an experienced homesteader, but someone just getting into it. He talked to her about her hawks and hunting and she said she'd had "between six and eight," hawks, she wasn't sure. They talked about hunting dogs and she brought up hunting with a munsterlander, which I guess is Patty's husband's.

People who shock pigs for fun, have multiple hawks "disappear," take photos of their animals standing on and eating off of 3 feet of their own feces, take money months in advance from people for products they NEVER receive (including $15,000 for a kickstarter in which patrons never received the finished books), and then outright lie about having shares to sell of livestock which they havent had since coincidentally they were investigated for animal abuse and rehomed their livestock for FREE.

Every investigation has found a problem. First she lies about an agency coming by to check out her pigs. She said they thought it looked great, gave her pamphlets and that psycho even said she hoped to consider them friends. Then recently they stopped by a second time "to follow up on an issue and drop off a perfect report."

We have filed for copies of all of the investigation reports.
She still has yet to be investigated for her contaminated soap making operation and for not filing various home business documents, including having someone look into if she's charging sales tax appropriately, etc. Then there's that pesky issue of online commerce that never comes by the promised date if at all. That investigation is handled by the ftc.
It's just the tip of the iceberg indeed. If she would take care of her animals, she would be out of the spotlight. It's been ten years and she has yet to do so.
Now she is begging for two as there are two able bodied, unemployed women living in the hovel and neither has the sort of ethic that makes them want to work for a living. There are people in this world who manipulate and lie their way thru life and it looks like she has managed to get a young woman involved in her mess. We feel sorry for a person who is desperate enough to end up living with a mentally ill narcissistic sociopath. It's only a matter of time before she realizes what she's gotten involved with and runs back down the "mountain" to freedom.
Every call or email made to various agencies included proof of an animals mistreatment supported by either a social media post or photograph from Pig Shocker's own content online. Pig Shocker told on herself, we simply made sure that the right people saw it. She has no one to bl as me but herself.
She has to make her social media private because she won't ever clean up her act. She can only hide the terrible things she continues to do.
Oh and let's not forget the photo of the moldy hawk glove nor the MULTIPLE mentions of mold in the house on social media (all have bern forwarded along with photos of hawk shit all over the walls and furniture). Damn right we will forward that information to the appropriate agency. The hawk being in the house isn't the issue. The hawk being in a house INFESTED (by her own admission) with mold is endangering the health of the hawk.

When this blog started I shared everything. Every victory, every failure. Every single stupid mistake I made learning to farm as well as every happy little triumph. Posts about first eggs laid by hens I raised from chicks were side by side with stories about being thrown off horses or a sheep dying of some unknown disease.
I mean, that is what farming is, folks. It’s a gamble of hard work, luck, loss, and hope. You go out there and try your best but regardless if you are raising sweet corn or Cornish Cross - shit happens. I didn't censor myself. It felt important to tell the whole story.
When this blog started I was a new farmer, a single woman, and without support of nearby family and friends. I thought sharing my trials would be helpful to others trying to learn as they go, just like I was. And you know what? It was. It clearly was! I got such an outpouring of support and care and did everything from hosting workshops and farm festivals to publishing 5 books about my farm and animals over the past decade. I regret none of it. I made lifelong friends, learned from every mistake, and now looking back the farm I have in 2020 is beyond the wildest dreams I had as a hopeful traveler after college. The pasture is the healthiest it's been in memory. The animals are so healthy and well. My freezer is full of food I raised with my friends and partner. My cabinet stocked with preserves, candles, tinctures and syrups from friends that barter and share with us. It's a small economy of trust and mutual respect and worth between neighbors and farmers. This place is so good, and while it can always use improvements and repair... It is so, so good.
This past weekend was so magical. The kind of magic no adult can really comprehend. The kind of magic this farm rarely sees. My sister, her husband, and two young children came to the farm in all its October Glory! They played in leaves and carved pumpkins. They held baby chicks, met a hawk, went on pony rides and hikes. We told scary stories and ate smores around the campfire, all bundled up as the sounds of distance sheep and horses played background ambiance to our legends. They ate bacon and eggs I raised, and pancakes fried from the same recipe I have always loved. Seeing my work of years reflected in the eyes of a six and eight year old was amazing. Like seeing my farm for the first time again. My home was a place of natural wonder. And my heart was so full a flash of light from a struck match could've split it open. With my girlfriend beside me, my family all around me; I can’t tell you the love and happiness I felt for my life at that moment. I didn’t think about money. I didn’t worry about bills. I just felt the love and the light of having made it through (and to) a place worth fighting for. I’m 38, in love, doing what I love. Not a bad life. Not at all. It's all any of us can ask for.

DeleteBut there’s a real dark side to all of this. And over the years it has torn me apart. It has made me scared of inviting strangers back to the farm. It’s had state agencies and police at my door. It’s had me up all night with anxiety. Emails and threats and weird letters sent to my home from anonymous online trolls who have convinced themselves this farm is a horrible place and I am a horrible person.
And even though it is just a few individuals they have made me want to stop writing entirely. They made me want to disappear because of how afraid I became of them. Which is of course, what they want. They want me and my farm to go away.
So now I try to share what is going on here without going into too much detail about my personal life or the farm’s animal life, which is the opposite of how this farm and blog started. It’s got to the point where if I post any image of any animal, in any season, trolls look at it for any reason to call the authorities on me. Here's a list of recent reasons my town’s tax dollars had to be wasted to send police or animal control or other state agencies to my door.
I am “garbage feeding” my swine. What was the evidence of this? I posted that a friend that bakes weekly donates day-old donuts they can no longer sell from their stand on the side of the road. This happens once or twice a month, tops, and is one flour bag of donuts. The state was told (anonymously) I was feeding trash to my pigs and so authorities were sent to do a swine feeder check. When the Veterinarian came for that surprise inspection he and his partner apologized profusely and were upset as I was they were called to the farm. Garbage feeding means literally opening bags of plastic-wrapped breads and foods from supermarket dumpsters or restaurant waste also filled with napkins, plastic utensils, styrofoam, etc. I was feeding a sack of day-old donuts by hand once a month and since I wrote about donuts online the state was at my door. Fun.

DeleteI posted a picture of my older black horse, Merlin, on Instagram. He was laying down in the snow on a sunny winter day with his gray face showing. These same trolls called animal control saying my horse was sick because only sick horses will lay down in the snow. The gray on his face - not white hairs from a 26-year-old gelding, but rain rot from my nefarious neglect. The animal control and state police showed up.
Trolls also told these same officers that my horses didn’t have a shelter since one wasn't in the picture. (They do, a pole barn 40 yards from where the picture was taken.) And that since there was a fresh pile of manure in one corner of another picture I was turned in for "feeding my animals food on top of their own waste" - Horses poop. It happens. In winter they don’t graze and walk around as much as summer and instead eat hay out of one feeding station near the gate so their waste area is more concentrated. Imagine posting a picture of your horses with a poo in the corner and having the authorities at your door. That is my new normal.
I once posted a 10 second video on my Instagram stories of one of my dogs with its head out the window while an Avett Brothers song played. We were on a backcountry road in Shushan, NY going 10 miles an hour. Later that week a police officer approached me in town and asked if I was Jenna Woginrich? She told they got an anonymous call I was driving around my town videoing people’s property?! Oh, and it’s illegal for a driver to operate a device. I explained to the officer what actually happened, and why this was happening. She was so sorry to hear it and have bothered me.

DeleteI’ve had complaints to the DEC about my hawks because sometimes I post pictures of them inside my home. That is because falconers often bring their birds indoors for short stretches to get used to being hooded around the fuss of human voices and animals like dogs padding around or barking. On very cold nights, like below -10° I always bring a bird indoors. They complained to my my hunting license department I was conditioning my bird to be used to indoor temperatures and therefor hurting its chances to survive in the wild.
Online stalking has risen to the point where certain accounts of mine need to be private. If a fellow friend or farmer publicly shared they liked me, my farm, or my work or animals on social media an anonymous email would appear from a fake name explaining how I am actually a horrible person with links to "proof" of my scandals like a blog post where a pig got shocked by an electric fence. I guess these people don’t know about electric fences on small farms? I don’t know.
When I started dating someone serious even she got this email. She's a private person with private social media accounts. Trolls still found her contact information online and explained to her (the woman that loves me!) why she shouldn’t. So this isn't about animal welfare from zealous animal rights activists. This is about hate. It's about making sure I am not happy or safe in my home.
This is all just the tip of the iceberg. It’s exhausting. The local authorities are exhausted and sick of this. Animal control has actual animal abuse to deal with. And it doesn’t matter that Google had to remove one hate blog about me for harassment or that every single time the authorities are sent here nothing happens because there is nothing wrong: it will keep happening. And you know why?
Because I’m a woman living the life she wants publicly.
I don’t know if other farm bloggers or authors deal with this? I don’t think so. I think the combination of being one of the early big farm bloggers and a young, single, naive woman was the perfect storm of attention and parasocial relationships. I was telling people I never met my every thought, dream, desire, and hope. People felt they knew me. But that relationship was entirely one-sided and not real. But it felt so so real, because like turning the page of a diary people learned so much. And when that same attachment and one-sided care feels betrayed - like I made a choice they didn’t agree with, or spent money the wrong way, or didn’t know what to do in a situation they would - people felt angry. It wasn’t like watching a movie with a character they no longer liked. Their “friend” Jenna had become a villain not listening to their advice as they screamed shaking their computer screens from another state. So a small group of fans turned into stalkers. And they haunt this farm every day, and have for years.
I don’t know what the future of this blog or farm will be, I never have, but I do know that I am not going to stop writing. I am working on a book that is about what happened to me in the ten years between 27-37 that changed me so much for the better. That turned me into a woman that no longer hears those critics I never met but strongly heeds the advice of friends and neighbors. And when that book comes out it will deal with a lot of what fear and anxiety strangled my heart forcing me to want to quit every day. But that never won. Anonymous fear can not beat real human connection, love, support, and work. This weekend proved that to me. This doesn’t have to be a place constantly worried about the next officer showing up at my door. It isn’t a fortress to protect. It is an open-gated home where a scared girl became a strong woman.
And I will carry on. And I will farm. And I will write.

Watching her make poor, irresponsible decisions was one thing, but the obvious lying was the real turning point for me as a reader. She would raise money to "save" the farm, and then spend it on some unnecessary expense, meanwhile the farm needed "saving" all over again. Month after month, year after year.
She takes zero accountability for her mistakes, and becoming less transparent in her writing is a part of that. She didn't like the WARRANTED negative feedback she was getting, so she turned off comments on the blog, and she started to share less and less. Of course, she never stopped sharing the supposed status of her mortgage payment!
The solution to your trolling problem, Jenna, is to DO BETTER. Take more responsibility. Get a job, stop begging for your mortgage every damn month, stop crying wolf to get "sales" and when you do make sales, pay your damn taxes.
Oh but she's the perpetual victim! It's because she's a single woman! She was young! (She's neither of those things anymore, yet the trolls persist! Mystery!)
Every farm blog and youtuber gets criticism from people who don't understand farming practice. Case in point, the people who comment on hoof trimming channels (yes I enjoy cattle foot maintenance content) and comment, "if those cows weren't standing in their manure 24-7 they wouldn't have so many foot problems." This comment ends up on almost every one of those videos.
When the truth is, dairy cows are typically cared for very well, they certainly do not stand in their own waste constantly, and that pasture-fed cattle have just as many problems with their feet because domesticated cattle have been bred for production, not their ability to survive without human intervention. So they need foot care.
And the ignorant masses don't understand this. But do the hundreds of farming blogs and channels out there have the same issues with "trolls" as Jenna?
Nope. I'm not aware of a single one. Not even the many other single women who are farming.
That's because in response to those comments, they include in their content, regularly, explanations and they demonstrate how farmers and allied professionals make decisions about the care and breeding of these animals.
What does Jenna do?
She plays the victim. She takes money for one thing, spends it on another. She takes money for a product and never produces it. She forgets that she doesn't have just one person in the history of her farming calling the authorities, it started in a completely different state, with neighbors and a landlord who were so appalled at the condition of the animals and her property they were the first ones to call animal control, ever, and she was *evicted*. Am I remembering that right?
Isn't that what pushed her to purchase the property to begin with?
She perpetuates this mythical character about herself, she positions herself as inspiring, and yet she says she relies on piddling "sales" to pay her bills.

Back in the early days of the blog, after the first book, there was evidence of what she was writing about. That's WHY she started to experience backlash.

too compassionate?
The other day a man was standing by my vehicle, looking at my dogs panting in the car and told me he was ready to call the police on me for animal abuse. I had been inside a grocery store for exactly ten minutes, the windows were open. And yes, Jazz and Annie were in fact panting and the sun was out. I explained to him that we just got back from the dog park and these two older dogs tend to pant a lot more than they used too, but it wasn't from the car heat, it was from playing less than 15 minutes ago for over an hour. I was only gone ten minutes and was getting a lecture because it looked like I was a deadbeat. The man didn't believe that the owner drove 30 minutes from her home so her usually-leashed huskies could run at will in a safe fence and socialize in a dog park. He told me he had already called the police. I drove away so angry my knuckles were white on the wheel.
A few years ago when I was renting in Vermont, a neighbor accused me of animal abuse because she didn't understand any of my methods of animal husbandry. She thought the deep bedding in the goat pen was "me being too lazy to clean it out" and I was cruel to keep rabbits in cages, dogs in crates, and I was poisoning the well water with the chicken poo in the yard from twenty chickens. She called animal control on me and when the officer came to inspect the farm he shook his head at my neighbor, telling me if all animals were as well tended as mine his line of work wouldn't be needed.
A, she didn't get permission to keep animals on that property. That was the first problem. B, the "deep bedding" has repeated itself over the years (the Bobcat getting stuck in it, as an example). C, the rabbits were not just "in cages" the issue was that their fur was totally matted and uncared for.
DeleteAs for the dogs in crates, I remember on one of our previous blogs there was an old roommate of hers in college that stated JW would get up in the morning, get ready for work before she let the huskies out of their crates. This resulted in the poor things peeing all over themselves and the crates because you-know-who ALWAYS comes first.

Former members of the heathen group are coming forward to authorities armed with photos and statements. They realize if no one says anything, this will continue. Bring the abuse to light. Bring the dishonest online commerce transactions to light. Bring the soap making in filthy conditions to light. People who have been there and have seen all of that are coming forward.

Which is ANOTHER win in the fight against the animal abuse as in she will have a much harder time finding new victims to take advantage of which equals less income and better odds of the animals being rehomed to non abusive homes.
Remember to observe, document and report. It makes a difference.

I tried to do some research and y'all, your healthcare system is damn complicated. I could not get generalized information at all about income.
What this does suggest to me, though, IF THIS IS TRUE which is a big IF, is that her *recorded earnings* which may not include the "donations" for the products she produces, her recorded earnings would have to be higher than someone on social security (retired) or social assistance (disability / welfare).
The math never works out, but as a former accountant, I'm always drawn to the numbers driving bureaucracy.
It is not feasible she's selling enough pet portraits, soaps, and pigs to make even $1000 / month. No way. Therefore, her income SHOULD BE way below the poverty line.
She has talked for years how she keeps her expenses down by growing her own food. If all she needed money for was supplemental food, gas / truck repairs, and mortgage payments, she would not be pulling in any sort of annual income that would disqualify her for healthcare assistance.
Yet suddenly she "earns too much"?
This sentence is going to contradict some part of her story no matter how she tries to spin it.
Now, going with my theory that she has a regular income, either that income is assistance, and therefore she actually should have access to reduced premiums - contradicting this current tweet - or she's telling the truth about paying all her bills through "sales" and her income is so significant it disqualifies her for premium assistance - in which case, WHY YOU CRYIN' ABOUT THE MORTGAGE EVERY MONTH?
I am sure she has some work from home job. If she was on disability she’d be eligible for either Medicaid or Medicare.

I believe her under-the-table donations aren't all reported, but what she officially earns puts her above ACA subsidies. In,New York, this would be about $45,000 per year. Equally plausible is that she's lying (again) wanting to continue the sad tale of the humble-farmer girl living alone on the side of the mountain so she can separate many people from their money.
She most likely gets medicare which is given to people of any age who receive disability benefits after they have been receiving payments for a certain period of time.

Instead people were outraged that she couldn't be bothered to put the chickens into the coop at night (which she received for FREE for promoting it). And because of her laziness, chickens were freezing to death. Also saying that Merlin could freeze to death was a definite possibility since he has/had a crappy "pole barn" for shelter.
Her idea of a pole barn is one wall of thin sheet metal with a slight overhang. The horses can't fit in the actual barn because the ceiling is caved in and hangs too low.
After reading that bleg post, a few of us contacted the local authorities to request a welfare check for the animals. In her town there isn't an animal control and all animal welfare calls are investigated by the state police. So the state police checked it out.
At the time, her property was covered in snow and ice (as she had just blogged about the difficulties in feeding animals and walking on the ice). She was also keeping pigs in a bare bones fenced in area up in the woods without shelter. Pigs were outside in subzero temperatures without any protection.
The officers relied on Pig Shocker to show them the animals she owned. She did not mention the pigs and because of the ice and snow covering everything, the visit was very brief and the woods weren't checked.
The entire situation took place because she posted on social media about her animals freezing to death. How someone could read that and NOT report it is beyond me.

Now that she's almost forty, and has a well-deserved rotten reputation, her life of lies is finally falling apart. I'm pleased that my efforts, and that of others here and locally, have netted the attention of appropriate authorities. ReplyDeleteTHIS is the content I like to see: Shamsters providing repeated reminders of her animal abuse and easily discoverable lies - all of which are based on her own PUBLISHED writings.
We should make a top-ten in various categories. I'll start with ANIMAL NEGLECT.
10. Provides piss-poor or NO fencing for livestock, which has assured repeated escapes, a dangerous practice as she lives right on a well-traveled roadway. Despite receiving $$$$ from multiple sources (often donated by kind-hearted people), this hasn't been corrected. Good fencing makes good neighbors. If you don't have the fencing, don't get the animals!
9. Refused to build or use lambing jugs, instead left birthing ewes exposed to bitter New York winters/blizzards, without adequate protection. To add insult, she played the martyr by lamenting her worry about lambing, whilst safely escounced in her warm house on frigid, snowy nights. Who knows how many lambs were lost to elements or predators? All of this could have been prevented by using lambing jugs. A published author who presents herself as a homesteading expert would know this.
8. Prematurely removed young animals from their mothers, then bottle-raised them inside her house for photo-ops and social media attention. Simply put, this is bad animal husbandry, and it's happened way too often to be natural (or normal).
7. Treated chicks like disposable commodities. Where to start? Dead animal farm could be a Stephen King story. There must be hundreds of dead baby chick souls floating around, because she's had innumerable chicks die from neglect and abuse. Death by rats, cats, raccoons and dogs. Her cavalier attitude spoke when she advised that she buys twice as many chicks as needed - expecting half to die - because chicks are cheap.
6. Her chickens weren't treated much better. Egg-laying chickens can live long lives, but not at her farm. They've been decimated by predators and she had them freeze to death on her driveway because she couldn't be bothered to put them in their roost for the night. This isn't a beginner's mistake - it's laziness and not giving a fcuk about animals in her care.
Part 2.
ReplyDelete5. Who could forget the goats that were kept in their small electrified pen, standing on and fed atop three-feet of their own waste and rotted bedding? Thank goodness they were finally rehomed. Poor treatment of goats seems to be her specialty; in a previous state (VT?) she was reported for animal abuse because she tied a goat on a short chain for indefinite periods..."for its own safety".
4. Pigs were also treated horribly at Dead Animal Farm. When convenient to her and with little regard for the animals, she's either kept them locked inside a small, dirty space 24/7 (where she blew out the brains of one right next to its companion) or kept them outside 24/7 without adequate shelter, especially neglectful in winter. She fed pigs on top of their own filth and posted photographs that suggested they suffered from frost bite and mange. Her farm was rife with tapeworms / other parasitic worms (they love filthy properties), and she even destroyed pork product because it was diseased.
4. She has seldom called the vet or provided animals with what most farmers would consider necessary vet care. She doesn't live in the wilderness, she lives in a rural suburb of NYC, with a vet very close to her home. Yet, there are many instances of animals suffering through her neglect, as reported by her. Cats disappeared regularly, she hasn't neutered her pets and at least one dog appears to have untreated Lyme disease. She didn't provide vet care to sheep, letting them die painful deaths, then cried about how sad this was (for her) and suggesting its normal for farmers (it isn't).
3. She has failed miserably at providing adequate care to her two aged horses: lousy shelter, rare vet and farrier care, generally poor nutrition and poor sanitation. She quit giving one horse owner-recommended supplements for arthritis pain and she gives nothing to her pony. In fact, she quit giving her pony nutritious grain because it gave him "too much energy". That's right. She decided on substandard food because it made him too healthy and energetic. Multiple photos show the horses standing and eating on top of their own filth. This isn't normal. Horse people clean up manure.
2. Her mistreatment of wild raptors and apparent violation of NYS laws brings me to number 2. She is on her 6th raptor. With the exception of the first bird, all existed mostly as ego-enhancing photo opportunities to sell her brand and books. If you carefully examine her published comments, you will learn that they rarely, if ever, caught prey whilst with her. Likely this is because she hardly worked with them, so they sat in their cages day by day. Shamsters were told one died in her house, two alleged "releases" appeared highly suspicious and one escaped before a huge snowstorm, wearing its leather jesses.
1. The reason Shamsters call her Pig Shocker is number one. She kept pigs contained in falling-down electric fencing, which probably shorted out. After pigs escaped, she corralled them back and re-connected the electric fencing. This is something all animal-owners deal with: animals escape bad fencing - sometimes they escape good fencing.
But to her, the pigs deserved punishment. When they touched the newly-electrified fence, their squeals of pain brought a smile to her face. She reported that she then poured extra water around the ground, intending to give them an extra shock FOR SPITE. Who thinks that? Who does that? No farmer I know. She's clearly an animal-abusing sociopath. She doesn't deserve to have animals and Shamsters will continue to report misdeeds until their care improves or they are rehomed.

DeleteIf the GF is not "kicking in" for the mortgage, she's at least chipping in for meals, alcohol, gas money, etc. So you'd think that would save JFW a few bucks, right? Or perhaps the Pig Shocker is playing "sugar mama" to a hapless GF who's a decade younger.
Think about it, as someone said earlier, this chick must have serious issues to have settled for such a lazy, animal abusing grifter. Perhaps part of the attraction is her offering the GF a free place to stay with all meals on the house. I've seen people who do this: Being super generous to buy someone's love. Happens all the time. And if that's the case here, JFW's expenses have increased (especially with the holidays coming) and that why she's now begging hard core and tweeting out new disasters.
Wonder why the Pig Shocker deleted that tweet from a few days ago -- the one that had a link to her latest bleg post -- a tweet that requested help from her foollowers in how to deal with so-called "online stalkers" when one cannot afford legal help.
ReplyDeleteI immediately felt that tweet was an attempt by her to either get pity donations, or in the hopes that someone would suggest she start a GoFundMe account. She received a few replies, but they were of the "sorry about that" variety. Maybe she deleted that tweet because she suddenly remembered she already consulted a lawyer?
She wrote this back in 2018 when complaining about the same issue:
"This type of recourse for authors has legal precedent, and I have contacted a lawyer and spoke to him at length today. He specializes in such cases just like this in NY State. He assures me we have all the information necessary to move forward. I am not taking this anymore. If this site and ones like it remain up, prepare to be served."

She's a public figure. Many public figures have websites dedicated to calling them out on their bullshit. This is no different. As for the girlfriend, no one doxxed her. No one would have known about her if Jenna hadn't publicly offered up her info.
It's also fine that someone contacted the girlfriend to alert her to JFW's scams and abuse. But since the legally blind GF doesn't seem to mind what she's gotten herself into, contacting her further seems pointless and only serves to give JFW more to complain about.
If we are repeating what she says on social media, it's perfectly legal. If we are stating an opinion, it is perfectly legal.

No one is posting threats of bodily harm. That happens to actual public figures all the time (particularly women) and nothing is done - twitter won't even monitor and automatically ban that kind of crap - and they could - but they don't in the name of free discourse. I don't agree with that. If someone threatens personal harm on someone, and messages them their home address, that's a crime and they should be wiped off of twitter. But they persist without any hindrance, sadly.
Gamer-gate aside, though, FFF is acting like she's one of these women in tech getting attacked by ten thousand 4-chan trolls.

She reminds me of the able-bodied hippy travelers I see on the island who come from moderately wealthy families in Quebec or Australia, and would rather pan-handle for

ReplyDeleteThe timing of that post coincides with her very recent lack of sales. You can tell from her tweets how dismal things are and how desperate she's becoming. She also deleted a re-tweet in which she literally begged for someone to buy her pork shares since she's hardly sold any.
Like so much, FFF is wrong about doxxing. Correct me if I am wrong, but she held workshops at her home. She published her home address when she asked for holiday "well wishes" (read $$$). She's posted information about her parents, girlfriend, sister and neighbors. She told readers that she lives alone, sleeps in the nude, leaves her windows open and frequently is without power or working transportation. She photographed her living room with weapons casually leaning against a wall. To top it off, she's invited total strangers to go hawking with her and horse riding. For someone who claims to be terrified of online strangers, she's shared a huge amount of personal information. Way TMI.

From time to time, she's posted exceedingly personal information on townspeople, including when they are out of town.

And it's not illegal unless it's something highly sensitive like a social security number. Nobody at this Sham site posted the GF's address. But according to JFW, someone "sent" her warnings about the abuse and scams that go on at CAF. So effin' what? The GF has a public website with her email...so that is how someone knew how to contact her. The Pig Shocker just doesn't like the fact that someone did that. Oh, boo hoo.

It's also interesting how she still refers to herself as "single" whenever it's convenient to whine about her victim narrative. (Even though she brags about "her girl" all the time.) Just like she's either a "strong woman" or "scared girl" depending on her daily circumstances, and making some paltry soap sales or not. DeleteMy take-aways (apart from his obvious veiled suggestions that her dramas are 💩💩💩 ) is that his connection to her was unhealthy, he recognized her farming wasn't sustainable and, with the help of his wife, he recognised her for the manipulator that she was and the ongoing bad decisions she made.
Especially interesting is the suggestion she never learned (or refuses to learn) the hard lesson his bankruptcy taught him: " I often thought of what I wanted, not what I could afford. "
Note Jon Katz's comments were made over four years ago, when she was still making an attempt at being a homesteading "expert" with workshops and classes. Since then, of course, her workshops have stopped, as have most classes and content-based writing. I wonder what he thinks after watching another four-plus years of fabricated fake farming life?

PDD. I agree with what you wrote, and have also linked that article several times here. It's good for newbies to read it. I also reread this Jenna "gem" today on Meredith's blog: http://highstfarm.blogspot.com/2015/12/cold-antler-sham.html. It's full of comments from more people who've been scammed by the FFF before. It also discusses her late mortgage payments and begging for free funds. And it's almost five years later, and nothing has changed at her shit-how. If anything, it's worse. She comes across as being even more self-entitled now, and an even bigger arrogant asshole. BTW: Jon has mentioned to me that he has "very little to do with Jenna Woginrich." I read between the lines, and it's clear that he dislikes her.

So that implies the payment due on September 1st has not been paid. Is that "September's mortgage"?
If that's true, then she has a mortgage payment due on the 1st of every month. She would currently be owing September and October. So really the correct sentence would be (if any of this were true) "I am two mortgage payments behind."
Because both are due, and both are unpaid.
She picks these vague, inconsistent ways of describing the manufactured mortgage crisis, wanting to make things sound urgent enough to need help, but not so urgent she should actually, you know, get a job to pay for life's necessities like the majority of us in society.

ReplyDeleteWIW, interesting about your wife going to work for Dollar. Good for her. Their growth strategy (see attached link from Forbes) makes a lot of sense. Two towns away, there was tremendous initial resistance to DG opening local stores; mainly there were concerns over their ugly signs, unfair competition to local stores who cannot match prices, and the foreboding sense of big commerce moving into small towns and destroying individualism. Yet, most local businesses are already often affiliated with regional or national chains. I know after the DG stores opened, most townspeople welcomed them and now regularly use. DG contends their business model offers a contemporary edition of the old "general store" model.

Somewhat related, I spotted a long-time friend, a well educated woman from an elite NE private college, who is now in her 40s and working as one of the managers at a somewhat larger discount store.
"How are you?" turned into a discussion of the company, how she had been laid off from her previous professional position and how happy she was to have been forced out of what amounted to an under-paid, cut-throat "junior executive" rat race. In her new job, she had regular hours, solid benefits, good salary and far fewer worries.
It shows there can be silver linings in unexpected places.
Thank you PDD, that is very sweet of you to say, and I really appreciate the information on DG. My mother worked for them for a brief period of time and absolutely hated it. It was minimum wage at the time. That's why I was so surprised to find out they now pay significantly more than minimum wage, at least where we live, and that they have a pretty decent reputation as an employer.

I really was hoping my wife would find better-quality employment in this city setting than she had in our formal rural home, but it's proving to be more challenging than we anticipated. I would really prefer it if she had a union job with benefits. I'm sure she'll find her niche in time. She's been unemployed since March 2020 thanks to the pandemic, and it has been weighing on my mind.
I have also enjoyed your posts, PDD, and your resourcefulness, as demonstrated in the posting of that forbes article for me :) It's really interesting because my wife was hired as a result of them opening a new location.

DeleteFrankly, I think their business model more resembles the old “dime store” model (AKA five-and-dime or “variety” stores). I’m older, so I remember as a child mom taking us to the dime store in our small ag town to peruse the shelves and choose a couple items. The stores are mostly gone now: Newberry’s, Woolworth’s, Ben Franklin, etc. Our dime store was not any of those major brands, but I don’t remember which it was. It even had the iconic round sign on the outside: “5&10”
The point is, I think when the dime stores started closing because of the rise of the department stores, they left a gap. There weren’t many places left for the lower income shoppers. The dollar stores now greatly resemble the five-and-dime that I remember, filling that gap.

Sadly, there is more than one commenter stating Jenna inspired them to take the leap and buy a small farm of their own. (facepalm) I hope those people are utilizing resources other than her books for instructions on running a small homestead.
Someone suggested she set up a patreon and keep all her content behind a paywall, BWAHAHAHA!!! But then however would she accumulate new followers / suckers to give her free cash??? She TRIED the paid blog route. She got multiple people paying $65/year or something like that, and she abandoned it.
Yes, I remember her subscription blog, Cold Antler Clan. She was supposed to write a blog once a week and reveal things about herself that she said she didn’t feel comfortable sharing publicly. Once a week turned into once a month and then she abandoned it even though she was still taking money for subscriptions.
