….I understand anything about her but… I do not understand about the whole cake mix thing. She says she will bake a cake…with this cake mix…if she gets some arbitrary number of subscribers. The whole thing is so stupid I don't have the capacity to even try to think about it. The main question is Who Cares? Is there someone in the world that will subscribe so she can bake a cake? What if she lies and bakes the cake any way?……yeah, okay…WHO CARES? Is this what passes as content nowadays? We're doomed.

Coincidentally, one of her biggest supporters (see my first post) released her own hawk, with full documentation of the event. Maybe that gave FFF an idea.
For the record, I think Auburn, has been gone (possibly dead) for a few weeks now. Normally, FFF never misses an opportunity to revel in her captive-bird badassery, Her being the falcon queer and all, it's astounding that she hasn't shown off her tethered hawk in quite some time. CAST long speculated the hawk was MIA.
For folks counting - or Newbies - this isn't the only hawk suspiciously absent. Only the FIRST hawk (Italic) was released with proper notice and documentation. The second hawk supposedly died in her home (according to a member of her now-defunct heathen group). The third hawk (Aya) was "released" unexpectedly after she wrote that it clawed her face. The fourth hawk (Dash) "escaped" right before a major snowstorm, wearing its jesses. She was so upset by its loss *cough* that she carried on with a drinking party that same night and only half-heartedly looked for him.
We are now to believe hawk number five (Auburn) was released into the wild without advanced discussions, and we are to believe that a certain social media lover who documents the 💩 💩 💩 out of all her feral toys, somehow didn't properly document the hawk's release? Nah. Don't think so.

I have no problem with people who hunt for food, but she is really lacking a compassion chip. To kill a rabbit and boast by showing a bloody picture of it lying in the field is sickening.

I remember when she wrote about raising her first Thanksgiving turkey from a pullet. She described his antics and really seemed fond of him. But when she watched him being slaughtered, she said she felt nothing. He was hung upside down by his feet and then his head was sliced off. Ok, I eat turkey, I get it. The end was swift. But how do you raise an animal from a baby and feel nothing when it's killed???

DeleteActually, that is how you carry a young (weaner) pig if you can't back the truck/trailer up to exactly where you want them to be. If you watch other homestead YouTube channels, some of them raise pigs, and that is exactly how you do it. It doesn't hurt them, they just don't like it! I don't raise pigs, but you should hear one of my chickens squawk when I have to capture one of them for some reason. Sounds like I'm killing her, but I'm just picking her up! LOL

Yes, this is the way to carry piglets. You can't lead them anywhere. Still, she has so many more things to pick on with her horrid practices. We have raised pigs for a while now. Still, the best way is to get the new piglets as close to their home as possible. Then you can pick up and transfer quickly. Not stop and taking grinning smile selfies...

DeleteHonestly, piglets are just the hardest little dudes to keep ahold of, they are like all muscle and squeel. Their cry is pure pure subsonic torture and it's their defence if something bad got ahold of them. They really don't have a neck... Little like that they are like all body and right into their head. Trust me, we had to move our first litter and it was just the worse thing ever because the minute one squeels, everyone freaks out and it actually becomes very dangerous. A sow can kill you easily, they have huge teeth and a strong bite and will come out swinging if you make their babies squeel. The very odd thing is that if you get them by a leg and turn them upside down, they stop. They calm down and you can get done whatever you need to get done. Of course, there is a right way to do it and a wrong way to do it and you need to plan it out fast and quick for best results. what we would do is have a dog crate ready, with the door pointing upwards. We would grab a leg, lift and pop right into the waiting crate and then move them. My younger daughter is so good, she has them up and crated before they even squeel! With hogs, you want calm, smooth and quick handling. And giving them back rubs and treats a lot before any planned move or vet care/handling will really help as well. We always bucket train our big hogs so if one should escape, which, well, can happen to any farm animal, we only have to shake that bucket with anything in it, dirt or rocks, anything and they will follow us to the end of the earth. haha... All of our animals are that way. And we have a bucket near every enclosure, ready.
Yes, the technique that Jenna uses in this photo is how you do it. But stopping to take a photo is not preferable. It would have been better to have the truck back right up to a pen - even if it was just the pen they'd be starting out in / a quarantine period pen, and to lead them to their paddock in the woods once they are bucket trained. Better yet, learn to use poly-wire fence, train them to it, and then use that to run them wherever you need them.
DeleteAs a pig farmer, I find that a lot of the insights that folks share here are a little misguided. I am also a "pig shocker". I spent several hours today building fencing for several groups of feeder pigs, and when I see their nose hitting the wire and hear them yelp, I won't lie and say I don't feel relief. Spite? No. It's good to see that learning moment, and it's good to know that I've put up a fence that's hot enough to be used as a proper pasture management tool. A tool that allows us to safely and effectively run pigs outside where they belong. Something that Jenna has long since abandoned, despite what her years-old photos on social media would have us believe.
There are plenty of things that drive me crazy about Jenna's pig husbandry skills. Carrying pigs in the proper way and using electric fencing are not on that list.
Swineherdess, good points. I don't think anyone is upset that the Bird Butcher uses electric fences. It's the written insight into her cruelty. She waited until the pig touched the fence and she heard the squeal of pain which brought a smile to her face...then poured water on the ground to give them a stronger jolt just for "spite". That is some sick thinking.

This is the person who couldn't be bothered to coop up chickens in subzero weather, so some froze to death. This is the shepherding "expert" who didn't use lambing jugs during winter storms, instead sitting inside, drinking, lamenting to her fan base that she occasionally went outside to check on lambing. Oh, poor FFF, feel sorry for her. Too inept and lazy to use proper lambing techniques. How many lambs were stillborn? Dead soon after birth? Eaten by predators? Kicked by horses? She's a disgrace to farmers everywhere.

It fits right in with her victim narrative. She can "gallop" (without her horses) off into the sunset, and try to live like a lesbian in another city. I think that the steady loss of followers on Twitter indicates that others are walking away from her train wreck.

DeleteI'd love to see her sell the place, rehome the animal props, and downsize. She can focus on her dogs and gayness, maybe rediscover her love of writing (because she clearly enjoyed it early on), and start socializing (her self-isolation over the years has clearly made things so much worse for her). She could have a fresh start and maybe actually be happy.
But all that would involve some level of work and she avoids that like the plague. It also requires some self awareness, which I think she purposefully avoids.

Funny thing, she always felt she was self sufficient and her foolowers were wage slaves. Actually the opposite is true. The poodles in cubicles are the self sufficient ones, and Jenna is dependent on their handouts. It's like those bears in the parks that survive by being fed by tourists. They forget how to fend for themselves. Then, when their food supply is cut off, they perish.

Last night we ordered a huge Italian feast (Pizza, calzones, meatball sandwich, spaghetti w/meatballs, garlic bread and salads) The look on the delivery kid's face when we tipped him $15 was worth it, especially after reading this sad story yesterday:

We normally tip 15% but went with 25% instead just to help out. Anyway, I digress -- So after dinner we had to make space in the fridge for all the leftovers and wound up with a bunch of bread that wasn't stale or moldy, but kinda hard. Also some chicken and bologna that seemed OK, but we knew it was over a week old. So we put the meat by the trash cans and strewed bread chunks all over, along with a few handfuls of nuts.
And this morning, I could not believe the sheer amount of critters down there feasting. I've done this in the past, but usually just the crows show up. But there were a few squirrels, and tons of birds (sparrows, crows) and even mourning doves (for the seeds on the bread). It was a madhouse -- they are just so hungry these days. So remember to help out all our awesome critter friends!

ReplyDeleteI follow the same principle here in the country. April is hedging its way to spring. Warm, then cool, then cold, then wet, then warm...it's all over the place. In the meantime, birds are here, stopping by, courting and nesting. They can all use a good meal. Behind my kitchen we've seen: doves, cardinal, robin, blue jay, cowbird, goldfinch, housefinch, bluebird, woodpeckers, chickadee, titmouse, turkey, turkey vulture, eagle and crows. The occasional raptor shows up too. There aren't many insects around, seeds are few and blossoming is slow to come. So why not give them a boost? My feeding stations have sunflower seeds, cracked corn (which squirrels and chipmunks also like) and a songbird mix. We also have heated water for thrm - very popular!
We think of ourselves as Live Animal Farm. 😊

DeletePoods - I am green with jealousy about all the birds you get to enjoy. I only see a small variety of birds...like about five. I grew up kinda nearby here, in the country-like hills of Calabasas where there were tons of birds and wildlife. But now I live in a concrete jungle near LA and it's pretty sad how bereft we are of beautiful wild creatures. It makes me really happy that you are helping out all the creatures and critters where you live.
DeleteAnd...I can't remember if I mentioned this here before, but I recently read a scientific report that stated that since the 1980's, the bird population (in the US) has diminished by 30% (gulp) -- and that's insane. It's due to light pollution, pesticides, construction, etc. And so very sad to hear that this is happening.
That is sad to hear about the birds, Anon7. I will mention, though, that another huge contributor to their demise is cats. That's right, your little house cat. Cats hunt and kill an incredible amount of birds. I grew up on a farm and we always had outdoor barn cats, but as an adult, I've always had indoor cats. One, for the safety of the cat (stray dogs, traffic, even coyotes around here) and two, because of the songbirds.

Thanks, DM! Been a bit busier than usual here. The stay-at-home mandate means we have the time to do a super duper heavy spring cleaning this year. And then on top of that, planning once-a-week strategic shopping trips, as well as having to wipe down everything that comes in from the outside. It's a lot of work. ReplyDeleteI keep getting drawn in because I can't believe it's gone on this long. Every month Jenna's not sure she can pay her mortgage, and magically she always does. Does she really make enough money in soap sales? Does she really sell that many drawings? Even if she made the best soap and drew the best pictures, I don’t see how she could earn enough to stay solvent. Why hasn’t she thrown in the towel? It’s clear that we don’t know the whole story, and that Jenna will never tell it. But still we want the mystery solved! It’s a very human desire, to want answers, to want the story to make sense, to want it to be resolved in one way or another. It keeps you interested even when you don’t want to be.
Another thing that keeps me hooked: Jenna doesn’t farm and very few people seem to realize it. She calls herself a farmer and her fans and followers seem to accept that she is. But here’s the thing, Anon 5:52—as the years have gone by, there’s less and less evidence that she does any farming at all. She doesn’t seem to grow anything. Every year she buys a couple of pigs and sells shares in them, but that doesn’t make her a farmer; it makes her a middleman. She keeps chickens and now she has a goat, but that goat seems to be a pet more than anything. You realize, right, that goats are herd animals and don’t like living alone? That her new goat is another prop, like the hawks she’s had over the years and kept inside the house or taken to the local pub?
But wait! What about those pictures on Twitter and Instagram? Don’t they prove Jenna is in fact a farmer? Anon 5:52, here’s an exercise for you. Go through the Cold Antler Blog and check out the photos from five, six years ago. Those same photos have been reposted on Twitter and Instagram as though they were taken recently.
Jenna doesn’t farm, and yet her message is, “Buy my stuff to support this farm.” What she’s really selling is a story about a lone woman farmer living a life other people don’t understand—except for her supporters, of course, many of whom dream of having a small farm, raising chickens and pigs, living off the land, playing the fiddle, and enjoying a simpler, more authentic life. It’s a great dream, and a lot of us were initially drawn to Jenna because it was our dream, too. In fact, you know that farm that Jenna says she bought all by herself? A lot of us here helped her pay for it with our donations and purchases. Funny how she never gives us any credit.
Would people be as eager to support a woman who didn’t claim to be a farmer? Who was just somebody who had a hard time paying her mortgage every month? It’s the farming that draws people in—the idea of the farm—that makes them want to support Jenna. She’s a scrappy farmer living off the land the way you wish you could! Send her some money, okay?
So yeah, I think about Jenna. I think about how social media has allowed her to construct a story that is simply that—a story—and how people take her story at face value. When anyone pushes back, points out inconsistencies, asks questions, she blocks them. That’s another thing to consider, Anon 5:52. First Jenna stopped allowing comments on her blog—too much pushback, too many questions, complaints, too much advice about how to do things better—then she got off of Facebook for the same reason. Now she’s made her Twitter and IG accounts private. Doesn’t that make you wonder what’s up with her? I think it does, or otherwise you wouldn’t have come here in the first place.

DeleteShining the spotlight on inconsistencies, lies and hyperbole of a person who runs a business, whether it's branding, writing, farming, soap-making or graphics, shouldn't be difficult to grasp.
It's intriguing to watch a business owner and animal caretaker who hasn't substantially grown or improved, despite years and hundreds of critical comments. In fact, over the past few years, she's resented and actively resists advice, even as her farm appears to be deteriorating. It truly is mind boggling and therefore somewhat addicting.
Likely, she'll never change. She'll change victims, move to new venues and blame her various failures on everybody else.
After all, she ended Oakpaw, Etsy, Reddit, Facebook and has now closed IG and Twitter. For a person whose business model needs public input, this seems unusual. As others have said, there are many online homesteaders, gardeners and farmers, yet none of them are consistently called out for faked narrative and poor practices. Why is that?
Great comments and spot-on observations, too. It sums up what a lot of us feel about the FFF, and why it's hard to look away from her epic failure at farming. (And the rest of life.) I've also noticed how when critical commenters appear here, and we refute them with proof and/or links, then they disappear without debate about JFW.

Except in a real foreclosure, that just buys time to get another mortgage. She should not qualify for a different mortgage, being unemployed for 10 years and living off donations. Especially not now, when the market is shrinking and financial institutions are not wanting to take on risky loans.

ReplyDeleteI used to be a fan. I donated monthly because I thought I was giving Jenna a hand up until she could support herself on her own. I expected big things from CAF.
Not only did nothing change, it got worse. It seemed that once she got used to living on handouts, she lost all ambition for CAF. I watched my donations go down the drain. Finally one day I realized if I was going to fund anyone's dream, it would be my own.
I wish I could get my money back. I could have used that money, but I thought I was being kind by offering a helping hand. I never got any thanks either.

DeleteHello everyone! Kentucky here. Horrified that Jenna is shopping for lambs. Who in their right mind would buy a share to be delivered "sometime" when the farm is under threat of foreclosure? On a brighter note. The farm family is ticking along. Garden plowed, new strawberry patch planted and new blueberry bushes in the ground. The baby goats are thriving now with Mama (she got the hang of taking care of them after a day or two) in the field. Grandma goat will hopefully kid in the next week or so. This will be her last breeding. We're hoping for a doeling. Then Grandma will live out her days with good food, a secure barn and a field to roam in. We finished our hatch yesterday and it was a success. 17 of our 18 eggs hatch. The munchkins have been saving the eggs for the last week to reload the incubator. With the current food issues, we'll be keeping the roos for the freezer. Females are going to new homes. No problem selling them right now. Thanks to everyone for keeping the blog going. The photograph for the latest post pictures three lambs. In the post itself, Jenna writes about looking for lambs to buy, suggesting that she doesn't currently have them. So it's got to be an old photo, right? But anyone not paying close attention would assume it's a recent one, since it's attached to a recent post. This is what she does. This is her scam.

ReplyDeleteShe's advertising on IG that she's looking for a ram if someone has one to sell, bottle of grown. It sounds like she's planning to breed sheep. This infuriates me! I thought the animal welfare checks meant that she wasn't allowed to start a breeding operation? If she truly bought bottle lambs, and is planning to breed them this year, that's horrible. She shouldn't be breeding ANY livestock, but breeding lambs who are too young & small is asking for trouble with pregnancies & deliveries. I've never once heard her talk about FAMACHA scores, parasite loads, barber pole worm, mineral intakes, the importantance of having an emergency on-call farm vet who specializes in ruminants, or what to do with a prolapse. Not to mention pasture rotation and good fencing (GOOD fencing is #1 infrastructure cost a raising sheep!), electro netting or permanent paddocks to rotate. These sheep will suffer!! They are only being used as a prop!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've done more than my part in getting animal control officers to investigate CAF. (Including hours of compiling evidence, making phone calls, and following-up on contacts.) I'm too tired to do more now. I don't know what else there is to do. Other than others stepping in and helping out.

DeleteThe new photo of her supposed lambs looks like it was taken in a small wooden shed. Why squeeze into a space like that for a photo instead of taking one of them outside? It's because they aren't on her property and she can't show their surroundings. I would bet if we search online pics belonging to the people she knows who have livestock, we would find a photo of that same indoor space.

PDD. Her moods are more mercurial than anyone else's I've ever seen. We all know here that she can't be trusted to tell the truth about anything. So then she either lied about that, or is lying about sleeping over at some girlfriend's house.

She keeps reporting that she hasn't gotten her stimulus check but if she bothered to read the newspaper or on line those don't go out till May sometime. She thinks she will be able to pay 2 months mortgage with that in April? And she thinks she has found a loan to get those 2 months paid. So which is a loan or waiting on the stimulus check? And what about next month and the month after and she will now have 4 new sheep to feed? Oh life is so good and blah blah blah. unreal.
